6 Tips for Moving with Pets

Ceci Cook September 9, 2025

Moving to a new home brings excitement, opportunity, and, often, a little chaos. Between packing boxes, scheduling movers, and updating addresses, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Now, imagine navigating all of that while also making sure that your four-legged companion stays calm, comfortable, and cared for. Whether you’re relocating across town or across the country, moving with pets takes a bit more planning and much more heart.

Your pet doesn’t understand what a moving truck means, but they do understand when routines shift and energy changes. That’s why it’s important to think through each step with their experience in mind. From keeping their environment stable to helping them adjust to unfamiliar surroundings, a smooth transition is possible — it just starts with you.

In this guide, you’ll find practical, pet-focused strategies to help make your move as stress-free as possible for your furry pals. Because when your pet feels safe and supported, you can both settle in that much faster.

Start With A Plan: Early And Thoughtful Preparation Makes All The Difference

Relocating is a significant life event, and when you add pets into the equation, it requires even more thoughtful planning. After all, you’re not just moving your belongings; you’re also relocating creatures of habit who can feel anxious when their environment changes.

Start your plan well before moving day. This gives you ample time to prepare not only your logistics but also your pet’s emotional and physical needs.

Schedule a vet visit early to confirm that your pet is healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Ask for a copy of their medical records and any prescriptions in case you need to transfer care to a new veterinarian. You should also discuss whether your pet might benefit from calming aids or medications during the move. If your pet isn’t already microchipped, now is a great time — or update your contact information on file if they are.

Getting a head start means you’ll face fewer last-minute surprises. Just as you prepare a box of essentials for yourself, create one for your pet. Include food, bowls, leashes, toys, beds, medications, and cleaning supplies so that everything important is accessible throughout the move.

Maintain Their Routine To Reduce Stress

Pets thrive on routine. Whether it's feeding time, morning walks, or afternoon naps, these predictable patterns offer comfort. Disruption can be unsettling, especially for animals that are more sensitive to change. Try to maintain your pet’s usual schedule as closely as possible throughout the packing process and on moving day.

Continue walking your dog at the same time of day, feeding your cat in the same spot, and spending time playing or cuddling with your pet like you always do. These familiar actions reassure your pet that even though boxes are piling up and their surroundings look different, the core of their life remains unchanged.

If you’re hiring movers or have friends helping you pack, designate a quiet space for your pet away from the activity. Too much commotion can increase anxiety. A closed-off room with a cozy bed and favorite toys can create a sense of calm and safety.

Get Your Pet Used To The Carrier Or Crate In Advance

For many pets, being placed in a crate or carrier signals a trip to the vet or an unfamiliar experience. You can ease their stress by helping them associate the carrier with comfort well before your move. Leave the carrier out in your home for a few weeks, allowing your pet to explore it on their terms. Add soft bedding, favorite toys, and even treats inside to build positive associations.

Practice short trips in the carrier around the block or to a nearby park. For longer moves, especially across state lines, it’s helpful to acclimate your pet to longer car rides. This helps reduce the likelihood of panic or nausea during travel. If your pet will fly, make sure the crate meets airline regulations and your pet has time to adjust to it beforehand.

Crate training isn’t just about logistics; it’s about giving your pet a sense of security when everything else is in motion. When the crate becomes a comfortable place, it acts like a mobile safe zone, providing your pet with a familiar refuge during the chaos of moving.

Choose Pet-Friendly Accommodations Along The Way

If your move requires an overnight stop, plan your route with pet-friendly lodging in mind. Not all hotels welcome animals, and even those that do may have specific restrictions or fees. Use hotel search engines that offer pet filters, and call ahead to confirm the rules, including any size or breed limitations. Bring familiar items like your pet’s bed or favorite blanket to make these temporary accommodations feel more like home.

Keep Pets Safe On Moving Day

Moving day can be chaotic, with boxes everywhere, doors opening, and strangers coming in and out. This environment can overwhelm your pet or even cause them to run off. The safest option is to keep them in a quiet room with the door closed and a clear sign that says “Do Not Enter,” or arrange for them to stay with a trusted friend or at a boarding facility for the day.

Ease Into The New Home Gradually

Once you arrive, resist the urge to introduce your pet to every room at once. A slow, gradual introduction helps reduce stress and allows your pet to explore their new surroundings with confidence. Start with one designated space with their bed, food, toys, and other familiar items. Let them get comfortable there before expanding access to the rest of the home.

Keep routines consistent whenever possible. Feed them at the usual times, maintain their walk schedule, and spend extra time with them in the early days. Animals often pick up on your energy, so staying calm and patient will help your pet adjust more smoothly.

Monitor their behavior for any signs of stress, such as hiding, loss of appetite, or excessive vocalizing. These are natural responses, but if they persist, consult a veterinarian. With time and reassurance, most pets adapt well to their new home, especially when they feel safe and loved.

A Thoughtful Move Makes A Happy Pet

Moving with pets doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With early planning, consistent routines, and a few well-placed comforts, you can turn what might seem like a stressful event into a smooth transition for both you and your favorite companion.
